The Difference Between an American and a European Roulette Wheel

Beginners to the fast paced game of roulette may be shaking their heads and saying, "What now?" when we discuss the difference between the European version of the roulette wheel and the one typically played in the United States. The difference is quite simple and when playing on the European roulette wheel, players have better odds of winning.

Why is That?

The American roulette wheel has slots for numbers ranging from 0 to 36. There is also an extra slot that is for 00. On a European live online roulette wheel the numbers range from 0 to 36 as well but there is no extra 00 on which to wager. This increases the odds of winning on the European roulette wheel.

When looking at how the numbers are placed on the roulette wheel, the novice may think they have been placed any which way the manufacturer decided. Not true; the numbers are placed so that chances of landing on even, odd, high or low numbers are distributed evenly. Even the colors are evenly distributed to give all the numbers a fair chance of winning.

Factoring in the Extra Zeros

The numbers 1 to 36 are either black or red in color. The slot for zero is colored green. On the American roulette wheel the double zero is also in green. These two green slots are placed on opposite sides of the roulette wheel. A European wheel has just the one green spot for a single zero. Having one less slot may not seem like much, but when it comes to wagering on real money roulette and winning bets, it can mean a lot to the pile of chips you see before when you are ready to quit the game.

You may not have much of a choice when it comes to what type of roulette wheel you play on. If you are in the United States chances are the casino you will be wagering at will have only the American version of the roulette wheel. Some casinos have both wheels so be sure to check and see if you can gamble on a European version in a casino in the United States.

In Europe you will not find the American roulette wheel. All the wheels will be of the European variety and you may find that compared to gambling on roulette in the U.S., you find that your winnings are much larger when you play in a European casino on their type of roulette wheel.
